Furniture Storage: Store Your Things Safely
By: Kim Meehan
Storage is always an issue especially when you are relocating or planning to go away on a long vacation. Finding a good place to put your stuff should be made with careful consideration because you want to get your stuff back in exactly the same condition they went in. The booming population has paved way for self-storage unit where an individual can store his belongings for a fee. Furniture storage seems to be the most secure place to store your furniture away but it is important to choose the right company that can guarantee the safety and condition of your things. Location should figure in deciding where to store your belongings. If you need a furniture storage regularly, the facility should be somewhere near your home. If you’re moving away, you can choose a storage facility that has a good reputation of protecting people’s stuff.

Before choosing furniture storage you need to determine how much space you need. Rent can go high for bigger spaces. It would be a waste of money to rent a space that you can’t utilize to the fullest. Also ask about the time when you’re allowed to access your storage. Some furniture storage facility grants you access to your unit 24 hours a day. Others implement certain limitations and access fee. Make sure that the facility offers climate controlled units. Antique furniture can be damaged by too much heat or cold. If you’re storing any appliances like freezers and ovens, open the door while in storage to keep the air in and out. Your things must be covered by insurance because you’ll never know what might happen. It is better to be safe than be sorry later. Plan ahead. Moving and storing things can take a long of time so it is important that you make some strategic planning ahead for a speedier process. Take note of all the things that you might want to put away so you won’t miss anything out.

If you’re not going to withdraw your stored items altogether, make sure to put the most frequented items in front and the least needed at the back of the furniture storage. Remember that your storage unit is not your entire living room. To save space you can undo and disassemble huge items. Tie the parts together and label them to avoid confusion when you have to put them back together. You can store non-furniture in drawers and wardrobes. You can stuff other things in them to make room for other furniture items. If you have to store things in boxes, make sure that the boxes are filled to the top. Hollow boxes will collapse easily. You can pile them up to the ceiling to utilize space. But don’t forget to leave a little room for you to move about when you need to reach for certain items.

Before storing your things in furniture storage it is important to keep all things clean and dry. Vacuum upholstered couches otherwise it could be targets for pests. If you have to store clothes, double check pockets for crumbs and leftovers. List the things that you have put in boxes and drawers. That way it will be easier for you to track the stuff that you will urgently need. Take precautions by wrapping precious furniture with cloth or bubble wrap. Storage facility can offer you protective materials for additional fee. Bedding and boxes should be covered in mattress. Take photos of all your items for safety measure. You can visit your unit when the weather is good and you can let the air in to let your things breathe.
