By: Kim Meehan

Collect boxes for the move. Accumulate recyclable, cardboard boxes of all shapes and sizes from your workplace, friends and family so that you’ll have plenty to choose from and use when it’s time to start packing.

Hire a mover or rent a truck ASAP. Source out pro moving companies and do research to find the best rate. Whether you’re hiring professionals or your move is a DIY job, if you’re moving during the peak season, be sure to book your mover or rent the truck well in advance. Come moving day, you don’t want to have a truckload of boxes but no truck to pack them into.

Appraise and insure your expensive items. Family heirlooms, big-screen TVs, artwork—these are all things you especially want to see in your new home in the same condition as your old one. Check your home insurance policy to see what concessions are made in the event of moving-related damages.

Book an elevator time. If you’re moving in or out of a building or condo, book the service elevator. Most buildings will only allow you to book the elevator for one to two hours so if you want a specific time, be sure to reserve the elevator as soon as you’ve confirmed your moving date.

Change your mailing address. Cancel or update your address for any subscriptions you have to newspapers and magazines. Notify creditors of your change of address so your bills are sent to your new place.

Schedule disconnection of all telecommunications services. Be sure to check with your cable, internet and telephone providers about their policy on moving. Some companies require at least one month’s advance notice of change or cancellation to their services.

Get rid of clutter. This is an excellent time to sort through and toss out junk items. Be steadfast about tossing away stuff you know you won’t ever use again. There’s no need to bring clutter to the new place. This is also the time to start finishing any perishable foods you have in your fridge and refrain from purchasing frozen goods which may be cumbersome to transport on moving day.
